The entire Punarnava plant, including the leaves and the root, has proven healing properties. It has been used for many years by the indigenous people of India. The medicinal value of the plant in treating many diseases is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, the main Ayurvedic text.

Punarnava has many ethnobotanical uses. Its leaves are eaten as a vegetable. Its root juice is used to treat asthma, genitourinary diseases, leukemia, rheumatism and encephalitis. In addition, the plant has many pharmacological, clinical and antimicrobial properties.

The plant contains punarnoside, rotenoids, boravinones A, B, C, D and E, lignans, flavonoids and sterols. Punarnavoside is reported to have diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antifibrinolytic and antibacterial properties. Of the two lignans, liriodendrin and syringarezinol mono-β-D-glucosides found in the Punarnava root extract, liriodendrin has a significant effect on calcium channel blockers.

Scientists reported that in addition to punarnavine, the plant extract contains potassium nitrate. It has also been reported to contain ursolic acid. The plant stem contains 15 amino acids, including 6 essential ones, while the root system contains 14 amino acids, including 7 essential ones.

  • Urinary tract infections: Punarnava acts as a diuretic. The diuretic effect of the plant is attributed to the presence of xanthone beta-ecdysone. In addition, Punarnava has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties that are particularly useful in treating urinary tract conditions such as chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections, including infections during pregnancy.
  • Kidney syndrome: In clinical trials in patients with kidney syndrome, it was found that the plant increases the level of protein in the serum and reduces the excretion of protein in the urine. Its action is attributed to the presence of rotenoids in various parts of the plant. Punarnava also reduces the swelling associated with kidney dysfunction.
  • Others: The arbinofuranoside flavonoid present in the plant has been found to reduce serum uric acid levels, which is extremely useful in treating urogenital disorders.
